CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Desdemona knocked on the door of the WYRD Home for Weyward Witches.

“Could you tell Aunt Wendy I would like to see her, please?” She asked as the door opened a crack and an elderly witch peeked out warily.

“Who are you?” asked a timid voice, her large black glasses with thick lenses perched on the end of her nose.

“Hi, Sandie.”

“Go away.”

“Sandie Witch, don’t you recognize me?”

“Go away!” She started to close the door.

“I’m Desdemona. I used to live here. I came to see my aunts, Wendy, Willa and Waldo.”

“Who is it, Sandie?” Another witch came to the door and peeked out.

“Evillina, it’s me, Desdemona.”

“Oh, goodness, come on in Dessie, we haven’t seen you in a disputable decade. Your aunts are in the parlor having a wee bit of tea.”

“Thanks. How are you, Evillina?”

“I’m well, thank you. Things have changed a bit since you were last here. There are only five of us at the home now, your aunts, Sandie and me.”

“How are my aunts?”

“Wild as ever, and will be delighted to see you again. It’s been too long. Come into the parlor, I’ll get another cup and make up a few more worm sandwiches. You used to love them.”

Desdemona giggled as she remembered that was the name Evillina gave to the lettuce, tomato and sprout sandwiches when they wanted her to eat her vegetables. These witches were her family, the only family she ever had; no mother, but loving aunties. She swallowed the lump of emotion in her throat and pasted on a smile.

“Hi, Aunties.” Desdemona opened the door to the front parlor. Three shabby witches were sitting around a dilapidated, well used table, laden with dishes of food. A very large dented teapot sat in the center, tipping its lid to each person. “More tea?” it asked repeatedly.

“Dessie! You are a sight for worn-out-witches eyeballs. Come in, Dearie, and have a wee bit of tea. This is our favorite time of day, remember?”

“Yes, I remember, and I’ve missed you.”

“We’ve missed you, too. Come, have some Witches Brew. Stanley just made it.” Aunt Wendy touched the teapot. “That will be all for now, Stanley.” The teapot settled down and closed his eyes.

“Evillina is getting me a cup and some worm sandwiches. How have you been? It’s so good to see all of you.”

“We were just discussing some of the events that have been happening in the Fossilized Forest.” Willa began as Desdemona sat delicately on a little antique chair that had socks on each leg. It was quivering as she sat upon it.

“Auntie, why is this chair trembling and why is it wearing socks?”

“You see, Dearie, we found that little chair out in the Forgotten Furniture Factory. No one wanted it because it was so old, so we took it home and Evillina knitted some socks for its legs because it was always so cold. Do sit on her and keep her warm for a bit.” Desdemona nodded, and smiled. Her aunties were always rescuing something. .

“Here’s some more of the news from the Forest.
